Chesty O’Connor (James Cagney), a brash riveter with a chip on his shoulder, joins the Navy to antagonize his nemesis, Chief Petty Officer Biff Martin (Pat O’Brien). Stationed aboard the USS Arizona, Chesty’s antics lead to a court-martial when he sneaks off to visit Biff’s sister Dorothy (Gloria Stuart), whom he has fallen for. Ostracized by his fellow sailors after bad-mouthing the Navy, Chesty redeems himself during gunnery practice when he extinguishes a fire in a gun turret and earns the Navy Cross medal.

Later transferring to the Naval Air Service aboard the dirigible USS Macon, Chesty performs an extraordinary act of bravery by saving Biff’s life during a dangerous docking maneuver. This act of heroism leads to his promotion to warrant boatswain—outranking his former rival—and culminates in his wedding to Dorothy in a heartwarming finale.

Here Comes the Navy features breathtaking scenes filmed aboard two iconic naval vessels—the battleship USS Arizona and the dirigible USS Macon. The USS Arizona’s appearance is particularly poignant as it was later destroyed during the attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941, making this film an invaluable time capsule of naval history before WWII.
