Tony Camonte (Paul Muni), a ruthless and ambitious small-time gangster, rapidly climbs the criminal ladder in 1920s Chicago. Starting as a bodyguard for crime boss Johnny Lovo (Osgood Perkins), Tony’s violent methods and insatiable hunger for power soon see him usurping his boss’s position and taking control of the city’s South Side.
As Tony’s empire grows, so does his audacity. He sets his sights on the North Side, controlled by rival gangster Gaffney (Boris Karloff), igniting a brutal gang war. Complicating matters are Tony’s possessive relationship with his sister Cesca (Ann Dvorak) and his pursuit of his boss’s girlfriend, Poppy (Karen Morley).
The film builds to a explosive climax as Tony’s violent past catches up with him, culminating in one of cinema’s most memorable and influential finales.
Scarface was notorious even before its release, with its graphic depiction of violence and crime leading to multiple battles with censors. The film’s tagline, “The Shame of a Nation,” was added to appease moral guardians, but did little to diminish its impact. Despite (or perhaps because of) the controversy, Scarface became a critical and commercial success, setting a new standard for the gangster film genre.
Paul Muni’s electrifying performance as Tony Camonte established him as one of Hollywood’s most respected actors, while the film launched the careers of George Raft and Ann Dvorak. Its influence can be seen in countless crime films that followed, including Brian De Palma’s 1983 remake.
