Step into the world of screwball crime comedy with Satan Met a Lady (1936), now meticulously restored and colorized in high definition. Directed by William Dieterle, this second adaptation of Dashiell Hammett’s The Maltese Falcon offers an unconventional take on the classic detective story, blending mystery with humor and eccentric characters. Featuring Bette Davis and Warren William, this pre-Code film is an intriguing curiosity for fans of vintage cinema and Hollywood history.
Private detective Ted Shane (Warren William) returns to work with his former partner Milton Ames (Porter Hall), much to Ames’s dismay due to Shane’s past involvement with his wife Astrid (Winifred Shaw). When the enigmatic Valerie Purvis (Bette Davis) hires Shane to locate a man named Farrow, the plot takes a dark turn as both Ames and Farrow are found dead, leaving Shane as the prime suspect.
As Shane investigates, he encounters Madame Barabbas (Alison Skipworth), a corpulent “empress of crime” seeking an eighth-century ram’s horn rumored to be filled with jewels, along with Anthony Travers (Arthur Treacher), another treasure hunter with dubious motives. The story twists and turns as Shane plays all sides to recover the treasure, only to discover it contains sand instead of jewels. In the end, Valerie confesses to Ames’s murder but evades Shane’s attempts to apprehend her for the reward money, leaving him entangled in the chaos of his own making.

Unlike its darker predecessor or John Huston’s celebrated 1941 remake, Satan Met a Lady transforms Hammett’s hard-boiled detective tale into a lighthearted caper filled with eccentric characters and screwball humor. While it deviates significantly from the source material—substituting the iconic falcon statuette for a ram’s horn—it retains elements of intrigue and double-crossing that make it an entertaining watch for fans of vintage crime films.
